I have been following The Hoover Boys for over a year now, and these guys find some amazing coins in the ground. Yesterday's episode includes live footage of a chain cent being unearthed. Its pretty toasty from being in the ground for so long, but definitely identifiable. Talk about the find of a lifetime.
Those guys are so much fun to watch. The videos follow a regular format, the guys are likeable, and the finds are frequently amazing. Over the summer, one of the fellows dug a 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime....and Kurt said, of course ... "Dude, It's a flowing Hair Half Dime"... Swear to God it is...
No offense, I think they put on a great production, but be careful, Youtuber's can make a lot of money producing good videos. Which means in this case the ground they are searching may be salted. Again, there is entertainment value in this. Thanks.
As a long time (30 plus years) detectorist, I can tell the difference between something that's been planted and something that's been in the ground for 150 years.
Nothing wrong with being skeptical I suppose, but if If this coin were planted ... at whose expense? Even in this condition, it would have cost far more than could ever be recovered by Youtube revenues. It just doesn't make sense.
I have indeed seen a couple videos that I know were faked. You just can't fake the way the soil adheres to a long buried coin as the sulphates are leeched into the soil and the coin's surface becomes microscopically porous. You bury a coin and dig it up within weeks or months ... maybe years .... and the soil will not adhere to it because it probably takes years for the oils in the pores of the metal to be dissolved and the degradation of the alloy to begin.
