I got this in change the other day. I noticed an odd line going completely around the edge. It is straight and maintains its distance from the rims all the way around. It appears like a tiny trench.

It is closest to the obverse face. What do you make of it?

Looks altered. It wasn't struck that way.

It appears very consistent to be PMD, and would be the first time I've seen damage like that. I though that the collar may have been involved somehow, but I don't exactly know how.

There are no scratches, gouges and it appears almost like you would expect a struck-through grease error to look, except very straight and on the edge.

Keen observation on your part. I never would have noticed that.

It does look similar to that, but wouldn't the upsetting process and subsequent strike in-collar have removed that?

It SHOULD, but it doesn't always. Especially when they get in a hurry and speed up the equipment or don't have milling pressure set high enough.
