I am thinking about purchasing a 1831 Netherlands 3 gulden coin. Could anyone, as I very much hope, tell me whether the coin is cleaned (it appears strongly to me) and what its overall grading (out of 70) roughly is.

I don't know about the coin or grade, but it does appear to me to have been polished and/or buffed.

Edit: As a WAG, I'll say it would grade VF Details if you submitted it.

Hi Frank,

not my direct field, but I have seen a lot of those in Dutch auctions
I agree with VF; good average piece of what is on the market; it is easy to find references for an idea of reasonable pricing

repeated polishing? maybe to some extent but not too disturbing (OBV: hair of king REV: top of crown are quite OK)

imperfections:
* circulation wear on the face of king WIlliam and on the lion
* two edge compressions (near "ING" 11.00 on OBV and at the D of NED); this coin was perhaps used in a pendant in the past? (see my recent post: an odd pair of 8 reales)

not a bad coin ; all depends on the price

Thank you for your helpful comments. The seller is asking 900 euros (fixed) for the 3 gulden coin. Is that reasonable, low, or excessive? The one thing that bothers me about the coin is that the anchor below the bust seems to be quite broad and flat. I never though about the idea of the coin being possibly used in a pendant in the past. Cheers, Frank

I use https://www.NGCcoin.com/price-guide...duid-1431749 as the rough price guide for these coins. The 3 gulden coin at https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces6552.html being sold on ebay (namely this coin https://www.ebay.com/itm/Netherland...m1438.l2649) is of better overall quality but it has a much higher mintage which is reflected in the ncgcoin price guide.

I agree that for 900 euro's and a bit of patience (very important for a coin collector) you could obtain a piece with a better quality (VF+ - no edge problems)
