Hello All, I have some morgan and Peace dollars that for whatever reason have the date completely scratched off. They weigh what they should and have also passed a silver acid test. They are in good condition otherwise, and do have varying mint marks. It is a mystery to me as to why they would have just the date scratched off. I looked for another thread on this and did not see it. The only back story I have is that they may have come from a casino. Just really curious about some opinions on why the coins may have intentionally been damaged. Thanks! enzeno

IMO someone probably was getting ready to put a key date on the coins.

Hmm, interesting @enzeno. Could you post a pic? I'm wondering specifically if the dates are lightly removed (with little damage to the surrounding fields) or harshly scraped. If the former, then I agree with @kanga, but if the latter, then it seems like someone with anger issues or too much time on their hands.

You would think if someone were trying to alter a date, they would remove only one or maybe two numbers.

People have been defacing coins, as long as they've been around, probably a bored kid.

Scratching the coins to test the silver didn't help either...
Really bad habit. Please break it now before you damage something worth money.

Maybe they dug the numbers of for application elsewhere.
Possibly scratched by casino so collectors wouldn't take them.

Hello! Thanks for all the responses! I will try to get a couple pics up today.
The scratching is very crude and done quick, I do not think that they were attempting to create key dates. Some are O marks for instance, and the entire date is scratched off. Why not leave at least the 18 in the date.
Oh and of course doing a scratch test should be avoided at all costs on coins. This was done at a customers request to be sure they were silver. These are expected to be culls or worse. I am not if anyone would be interested in buying these as coins. There are a lot of them.

Hello All! Finally got some pictures up. As you can see in the picture, it was a crude quick job to scratch off the date. Thanks! Charlie

I'm in for the casino/anti-collector hypothesis. It's faster/easier to scratch the entire date as you've shown than to leave just the "18".
