Looking to identify what's going on with this 1962-D Jefferson nickel..? I do my best with the pics and apologize for the poor quality of some close-ups...
How can we tell? Note the rim on the outside edge of the face of the coin. That rim is distorted from contact probably when it was dropped once. You can see where the rim takes turn there. On a Cud the area is higher than the rim, but also affected the reverse of the coin: Note on this coin the Cud is on the obverse of the coin and note the opposite side the lack of the metal from the die leaves a weakness on the opposite side. This missing metal offers no resistance to strike up from that die the design in that area. Imagine putting you finger on your hands together. Then press the hand together. Then move one finger. Note the resistance isn't there on you finger that didn't move from before. That is what happens on a die when one area ( Cud) is missing from the rim of the coin. The other side doesn't strike up. coophome= Cud strike up
