ok I finally got some good pictures, keep in mind that the conspicuous scratches on the obverse are all on the holder, not the coin, should be obvious but just wanted to make sure

Looks MS63 or 64 to me. Very nice.

My guess....MS 62, maybe MS 63? Dings on the obverse (in fields left of nose, cheeks, etc) hurt this one. Reverse is better, but a better pic would help.

Gold is far from my comfort zone, but I will hazard a guess of ms62. Cool coin, and very well struck!

I will add that my one experience with having gold graded was an interesting one. My father has a 1912 Canadian $5 gold coin (not bullion) that my great aunt won in 1912 from a music competition. The piece sure looked ms63 (my B&M dealer thought at least ms63 as well), and it spent no time in circulation. PCGS saw it as an au-58.

what I'm hoping to do is get this certified 63 because I got it 61 in an old pci holder and I thought it was undergraded by a few points, 62 is worth 380 but 63 is 1050
thanks john ap

So which of the big three should I sent it in to have the most chance of it coming back 63 or better?

For US gold I think NGC is actually a bit more liberal than PCGS and ANACS. However, you will have a choice to make. If you send in the coin still in the PCI slab I think it unlikely that any of the Top 3 TPGs would upgrade it. At best I expect they would cross it at the same grade. If you crack it out IMO there is a better chance it will upgrade. However, they could decide it's seen some slight wear and slab it as an AU.
If you decide to go for it, please let us know how it turns out!

Oh, I'd definitely crack it if I sent it in...I wouldn't be TOO upset if it came back AU, as I paid only 250 for it a few years back and it's a common date so that'd bump it down, but I'd be very disappointed. I'd be willing to send it in 3+ times to get it slabbed 63/64, especially with PCGS, because 63 is worth 1050 and 64 1750. But I know I said that part before. Anyone have any experiences with sending in a few times? I will definitely try NGC first though, thanks for your suggestion Jaobler.
