I found this coin today but would like to go the extra effort to verify that it is original. Which grading company is recommended fir this type of coin? I've attached 3 pictures taken with my iPhone. All thoughts and replays are appreciated.

First - don't fall into the current trap that grading companies are the answer to everything. The cost to have this graded would never equal the value of the coin if it is a legit no FG- unless it were totally flawless - which I think even in your pics I can tell this one has seen circulation. Second, the grading companies are pretty terrible at actually identifying No FG halves. I have seen MANY on ebay in slabs that say "No FG" on the label, and yet in the auction pics you can see a ghosted FG right where it should be. A ghosted FG is not a true No FG b/c the only reason the FG is not crisp on it is that the mint polished the dies too harshly and wiped away the details of the FG to a certain extent. With the 1972-D it is believed there actually was a die made where the FG was never engraved into the die. Coins made from those dies are actual No FG coins. In 1982 they did the same. Following is a pic of a slabbed 82 that obviously was made with a normal, but polished die. A true no FG has no trace of an FG (which is why its called a no FG!). The "experts" are lacking in this department. If you can get a sharper picture of the area in question, there are several of us on here who could verify it for you.

to the forum #1) there is a bit still there, it has to be all gone to count. #2) Coin needs to be in a lot better shape to grade it. Yours is circulated and looks it. #3) The Fees will be minimum $40, max $90+ depending how/who you go thru. If all coin would be worth in REAL WORLD realizations is $30, you lose big time. Needs to be a realistic value of $200 before submissions.

I found three last year from roll searching that were true No FG and sent them in to be graded. All came back MS condition and sold the 1972 for over $700 on an auction site. The other two were around $150. Sold all three after fees of selling for around $925. Grading fees I figured were around $30 per coin. All in, I was way ahead. BUT, I sent another 3-4 in that I thought were true No FG and they came back regular. Be very careful that you see no HINT of FG if you send them in for grading. I have another 1982 I'm sending in this week to get graded. Good luck!

Great replies with reality checks about the likelihood of not being a true "No FG". The hunt continues. I have other coin questions along with some desire to sell a few. Many thanks to all.

shotgung - what auction site did you use? I found one last week and would like to get it graded and then sell it. Also, I have never sent a coin in to be graded before. Do I need to go through a dealer? If so, is there a fee associated with that, aside from the grading service fee?

To CCF Znap187! Another member will have to answer your question, because shotgung has been offline since August 13th of last year.
