I was browsing PCGS CoinFacts today and I came across this gem: The PCGS certification number is 24503635, if you want to see it for yourself. It is a 1987 Silver Eagle graded AU-50. This makes me wonder - how does a coin made solely for precious metal collectors end up looking like this? Someone's pocket piece, perhaps? *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by Ariette 01/09/2018 3:52 pm

What's more amazing is why would someone waste the money grading an AU ASE? Maybe someone gave it to a kid as a present? Could be many reasons.

Quote:What's more amazing is why would someone waste the money grading an AU ASE? Indeed, although I have seen worse. Scroll through the PCGS population reports for some common modern series some time, such as the Lincoln Memorial Cents, and you will see that people have submitted circulated coins that can be readily found in circulation for grading! One wonders what the purpose of encapsulating a coin worth face value is - sentimental value, perhaps?

Ariette, stick around, watch the noobies. "This is my Cherrypicker's delight, how much is it worth and Should I send it in?". Those noobs that don't ask here first is your answer! They either know no better or have been given advise by the largely grinning LCS proprietor who has just mad a quick $50.

I would bet this spent a little time as a pocket piece.

If you watch them coin shows on TV they always claim $20 grading fee. I think that one rip off show is Coin Vault - always say "Just 19.99 and the $20 grading fee is FREE!!"

I'm going with Crazy on this one!
Someone probably thought they found a super rare coin in grandpa's drawer, wouldn't believe anyone until they sent it in. It could have been a pocket piece at one time, although I have seen many rough looking Silver eagles in dealer's boxes. I think once they get toned or scratched, they throw them in a seconds box. People come in and slide them around, picking out the best ones, the rest keep getting more worn.

Maybe, but in reality, how many people that think this coin is valuable even know about "sending it in"?. They would go straight to the coin dealer or Pawn shop to get THEE lowest price paid by them and think it was a fantastic deal -

Interesting coin ...
I'm a lowball collector amongst my other numismatic pursuits ... but would never have sent this in for certification.

I have rolls of ASE's never opened, I have them in airtights, mint packaging and some are just loose. I have a few that I have put in places and left them to see what they look like later on. I also have some nasty dingy ASE's that look like they came off the trash heap but at the end of the day, those nasty ASE's are still .999 fine silver. That said I have very few bullion ASE's slabbed and don't see much benefit in doing so.

I think this one is the current lowball ASE even though it doesn't show up on the Photograde. I think it sold for $35 when it was listed a year or so ago.
