I have a 1895 o Barber dime and it's missing the word dime on the back. I have looked on ebay for a while and never seen another one. I was wondering if this is a mint error or what it could be.

First off, welcome. Could've been struck with a partially Grease Filled Die, but I think what we're seeing here is just differential wear & tear.

How's come the word "one" and the mint Mark are highly visible? I've taken it to a couple coin shops near me and they have both said looks like "dime" wasn't warn off or scratched off either.

As mentioned- it coud be a Grease Filled Die. That is a sort of mint error, that when it is as pronounced as yours would add a small bit of value to your coin. However, with all due respect to the dealers who you showed the item to, my opinion is that unless they offered you an explanation of what it IS and even better if they offered $$ then their words carry weight to me. Just saying - "yeah that doesn't look like it is worn off" is not a convincing argument. Again just my opinion.

Ok would there be another place near me that I could take it to to have it looked at more? I'm near the Toledo ohio area. What kind if value would you put in this coin?

Quote: How's come the word "one" and the mint Mark are highly visible? For the same reason the ear of corn and wreath is so much clearer on the right side than on the left - it's not worn evenly. Quote: What kind if value would you put in this coin? I hate to opine about a coin for which I haven't even seen both sides of yet, but the 1895-O is certainly a rarity, and ,aside from the unobtainable 1894-S, the key date in the series. As a hole filler for somebody trying to complete a set, even in G4 it'd retail for a few hundred dollars, I think, presuming it's not an altered date forgery.

Really there are only two possible explainations possible and one has been mentioned already: 1). It was either struck that way due to a Grease Filled Die, or 2). Post mint damage through a deliberate attempt to remove the word "Dime" Why would somebody try to remove it makes no sense other than just idle time or just fooling around. You could send it in for third party grading and let them deal with the decision. We could speculate here for weeks trying to figure a cause but we would probably still be speculating weeks from now with zero progress. Whomever has the coin in-hand can better make a better evaluation. Good luck!

I suspect possibly used in jewelry (possibly a stickpin), then someone realized it was a key date and removed the pin smoothing off the back to remove the solder and removed DIME as well.
