I have been accumulating silver for a few years now and would like to start at 2017/2018 and work my way back collecting D,P,S minted coins. This includes penny to dollars. But should I buy the best looking coins or should I just look through my pocket change from time to time and do it like that. I know by buying it the coins will be in better shape but I would have a lot in it in the end. I think it would be fun putting together a full collection like this or you guys think I would have more money in it than I could ever sell it for?

Part of it depends on what part of the country you're in. I am in Texas, so I see more Denver mint coins than anything else. Putting together a modern set of P & D mints from change would take some time (you would have to buy the half dollars, too). Of course, S mint coins are proofs now and those are very difficult to find in change (but can be found). I would do a combination of both. Start by setting aside the best, most current coins and work your way back. It will get more and more difficult as you go. That's where you may consider buying Uncirculated sets or proof sets (if you want those) in lots. At least back through the 70s, they're not expensive and many are around. When you get into the earlier 60s, there's the whole 90% silver thing that makes things more expensive. In the end, if you are purchasing coins for it, it will most likely be worth less than you put into it. That's okay for me (to an extent) because I want the set and in the condition I want. That's why coins are not really an investment.

that sounds good. Just to add: are you thinking all coin types, or maybe only Cents or only Dollars for example? are you thinking about getting full runs of a coin type (all mint marks), or a date set (one per year)? EDIT - If you try to go all the way back on Cents or Dollars, a 1856 Flying Eagle cent will set you back $11,000 at least, and a 1895-P Morgan dollar starts around $37,500 I only mention those, because they are the coins I am missing

Is that a variety? I have a 1964 Kennedy half, but think its just a normal production. Don't think there was a spot in the Dansco Album

Quote:Is that a variety? It is an actual coin, but I was just pullin' yer leg a bit, Fuzzy. There are a bit over a dozen examples known, so there wouldn't be an album hole for it. It's "not supposed to exist", but does through what may be questionable means.
Edit: if this is pure coincidence, it weirds me out: http://goccf.com/t/305883

To be honest, I might have seen 1964 SMS mentioned, but had no idea it was a "thing". And no, I do not have a 1964 SMS Kennedy half dollar.

I collect by date, rather than series. I have at least one coin for every year back to 1797. 1815 is the toughest single year.
Collect from change or roll searches for the easy stuff.
Collect with proof or mint sets 1951-1964.
Collect individual coins for all dates prior.
