Hello, someone I know who owns a brick and mortar coin shop purchased this over the counter. He and I havent been able to find out too much information about it and he asked me to try to figure out what it is.
It appears that it might be some sort of german half thaler from schwabia or some swedish dominion in germany. Its dated 1545. Anyone know what it is or what it might be worth?

Regards,
XoG

@XoG, that is a pretty interesting piece. Looks like a match for Krause MB #9: Half Thaler from Swäbisch Hall dated 1545 as you note. Interestingly, it is noted as being rare, with Künker Auction price realized at about $12K for a similar coin in XF condition.

Edit: could you also please provide a weight and a thickness for this coin? Thx.

The fellow I know that owns this says it weighs 28 or 29 grams and is 40 mm in diameter. From what I gathered, most German Thalers around this time weigh around 29 grams or so. As such, this appears to be a 1 Thaler rather than a 1/2 thaler.

indeed, with 28-29 gram weight this is certainly thaler
although more common than the half thalers, it is a very attractive piece with a very nice patina
