I have a 1972 D penny that is missing the "t" in "states". All the others letter are clear and I have been unable to find the same error referenced on the internet. Any help would be helpful. Regards

@Kalafarm, first welcome to CCF. Second, having pics would be nice, but I agree with the others that in the absence of being able to see what you are seeing, your description fits a grease-filled die perfectly.

I uploaded an image of the coin to help identify the error and if it is caused by build up in the die, does this error have any value above face. Thanks for all the replies. regards, grh

What caused this is simple. A bit of grease was in that device on the coin. The grease prevented the strike from happening there. Often it is on other devices around it as well, but it can happen to just one device:

When it happens on 80% or more of the coin, then it is of interest to some:

But smaller amounts are not of strong interest.
