so I bought this '87 silver eagle somewhere, sometime in the last year or two... not sure where... didn't notice til months & months after that the coin's reverse fields are full of scritchy-scratchy die polishing marks, going in all directions.

it's a wonder I saw it to begin with. I ended up buying another '87 to compare them.

i probably would have just let it slide without investigation, but some time ago a friend gave me an 1879-S Morgan dollar with the same marks on the obverse, and it turned out to be a VAM-18A (doubled date, S tilted left, **obverse polishing lines**). it was my seeing those obverse polishing lines and remembering them. (that morgan is considerably gorgeous)

so when I saw the polishing lines on the silver eagle, I figured I better investigate.

question: how common an occurrence is this particular fudge on a silver eagle? this would be the first one i've seen and owned.
Rest in Peace

Are the lines raised above the fields.

If so it is as you suspect.

Not common for ASE but not scarce or rare. If the TPG gives it a named error, that would definitely increase the value.

they are way too tiny/thin for me to determine that. no scratches on the devices, only the fields, only on the reverse.

it looks just like the polishing marks I see on the morgan I mentioned.

until this coin came along I had never observed these kinds of polishing marks on a silver eagle.
