I've made the decision. I've been kicking around the idea of ditching the 7070, and in fact, pulled 3 coins from it today. I removed my silver 3 cent piece, my nickel 3 cent piece, and my 1829 Half Dime.

I pulled this image from the archive here. This first image is what the coin looked like in 2010 when I placed it in the Dansco album.

Here is what it looks like 7 years later. Some will like it better. I think the coin's all but ruined. The toning to the reverse in particular is flirting with having irreversibly etched the coin's surface.

I do not like anything cardboard (or substance that has a chance of retaining moisture (ambient humidity included) touching my coins. I know it has been said here that Danscos (and other albums obviously) tone coins.

I do not understand why people want tarnished coins except the immediate gratification of some looking very pretty. The Coin World is the one of the very few places I am aware of that tarnish can be desirable.

I don't mind albums for circulated stuff.

The difference between the coin in 2010 and 2018... oops...forgot we started another new year....is pretty profound. I probably didn't choose the best archived image.

Somebody suggested the 2x2s that are self adhesive, but that involves chemicals...the glue itself. I'm going to stick with the staple type.

I'm fixin' to ditch my small cent collection in order to pursue the type set more seriously. I've been "stalled" with 5 vacancies (gold page notwithstanding) for way too long. I just made an offer on a killer 1912 10 Dollar Indian (the offer was accepted), so the funds have to come from what I've already got. Should be real fun...but I'll bet it feels more like real "work".

The 3 coins I pulled tonight aren't the only ones to have suffered, but those are the ones I decided didn't need to be in that environment for even one more day.

That is just terrible. It would break my heart to see such a beauty get toned so deeply.

Every coin I own is in a self seal no staple 2x2 or 2.5x2.5, with the exception of TPG s. I've been storing them in those self seal for over 25 years and nothing has changed color in that period of time.

I have lots of bright uncleaned silver and I love white luster. They stay that way.

That's useful information ... Thanks. Its cheaper to switch holders at the beginning of the process of changing over .... than it is to do it later. The staples make writing anything on the holder much more difficult.

Maybe it's not the holder but the environment?

The self seals are about 20 cents each, but you get a lot more writing space, no worry about staple damage, and have a tab on top when closed to make it easy to pull them out of the pages.

Then get the 9 pocket pages for your TPG and you can have your raw and your TPG together in one album.

If you get the Numismatist they are advertised every issue.

I don't have anything that's slabbed right now, but that's very likely going to change. I am looking to buy a gorgeous 1912 10 Dollar Indian. I'm going to want that in a holder. There are a few others that should be graded simply because when the prices start getting "up there" folks want 'em slabbed.

I'll probably go with the self sealing holders. Do they also come in the 1.5 x 1.5 size?

A shame for sure. I think John1 and moxking's posts are worth reviewing. I haven't kept anything in cardboard for 40 years.

My coins live where I live ... so I don't think environment is the issue. That said ... The zinc Lincolns, which were in Lighthouse 2 x 2s ... have a couple tiny green spots that I don't believe were there when I placed them in holders. Those came from circulation (in 2009) so there may have been a speck or 2 of contamination on them when I sealed them up in the holders.

Not all of my coins were as adversely affected.

Can somebody point me to a link to the self sealing holders just so I can see what we're talking about? Maybe I'm not thinking of the right thing... though I think I am. They're like the staple type ... but PSA type instead of having to staple them?

Moxking, Do you have pictures from before the coins went into the self adhesive and then pictures after 20 years to compare? I would love to see if there is any difference. I am not saying that I do not believe what you are saying, I just know my eyes see things totally different now than 20 years ago. I have always wanted to try the self adhesive 2x2 but I have heard negative comments about them just like the chemicals/glue used. Maybe I should revisit.
I use 2x2 with staples and then heavy 20 slot vinyl pages and I have never had any issues with any. I also use the 9 slot pages for my TPG coins.
After reading this post I am thinking of getting rid of my Dansco albums.
I learn so much from this forum, thank you to everyone who posts comments.

I write on them beforehand while still laid out flat and before folding the 2X2 on its crease. The staple also is flattened on the back with a pair of pliers I use. I used to have a flat clinch stapler, but it broke and the staples I crimp are better (flatter) anyway.

Recently started to use a Brother label maker instead. Print and affix label, then staple/crimp. I like the looks of the labels.

I should be well fixed for staplers since, back when I ordered in the stuff to put up my set of mercs.. I accidentally ordered an extra stapler. I meant to order 2 boxes of staples and 1 stapler... and ordered 1 box of staples and 2 staplers instead....dummy.

Don't be so quick to blame the album. If the coin had contaminants or chemical compounds on its surface which were already causing the toning to occur as seen in your original photo, they would have continued to tone the coin once you placed it in an album. A very quick rinse with acetone or even distilled water can sometimes be enough to stop any further toning from progressing -- I do at least a quick acetone rinse and air dry on almost every non-copper coin I have before it goes into the Dansco. So far, toning has been minimal, except for a few coins which I purposely or otherwise did not rinse; those are developing a nice even gold/reddish tone.
