So this isn't really an error or a variety, but I'm sticking this post here anyway because this is the forum I prefer. I collect fake coins when I get a chance to pick them up, and wanted to photograph my 1909 S VDB anyway, so here are the pics and I leave it to the experts on such things to help explain what makes this coin fake vs real. Good pics of a pretty darn good fake so might be a chance to go on about what's what and why's why about these things. I look forward to reading the comments. And to save time, the mint mark is spot on for position #2 and here is an offset overlay to show a legit position 2 coin (from NGC website) on my coin. And the final question is: what method was used to create this fake?

If it's a fake, it would have fooled me. Looks like Die Pair #1.

How did you confirm it was fake?

Just another reason not to overpay for my coins. It looks okay to me, but I'm a novice at best. I look forward to learning.

Counterfeit. The mint mark is in the wrong position.
EDIT: It is extremely close, but doesn't match. Also if you look very closely, I think I can see some scratches that appear to go underneath the mint mark, visible on both sides, but not across the mint mark.

Good input from everyone but I'm not convinced it's bad. MM style and position still look correct to me for #1. @tropicalbats, give us some background here and how you came to post this as counterfeit.

I did overlay on style 1 and it was exact match but I have been wrong before and for sure not an expert as I don't have the money to afford any of these expensive coins but I'll sit back and watch

Frog, awhile ago, from somewhere I recall a marker for the Chinese fakes was the die dot on left wheat stalk I circled above. Unless that's a marker for a real one...hmmm

Crazy - Who knows, I'm no expert. I certainly wouldn't buy one raw, and this very convincing example only reinforces that. I once thought I was pretty good at verifying these - no longer I'm afraid.

Not trying to ignore the comments, just was out for dinner on a Friday night.
I am calling it a fake because I paid twenty bucks for it from a dealer who knows coins pretty darn well. And some others are hitting on stuff I saw, such as scratches that seem to go up to the mint mark and then start back up on the other side like it was glued on top of them, and that the mint mark appears to be the wrong style with a slanted lower serif. Anyway, I am not an expert on these but looked like it failed just enough to be a fake, but would love it if somehow it wasn't.
