So I got a bulk lot of uncirculated rolls a while back. I wasn't happy when I opened this one and saw that it was shield zincolns, but several had some metal movement that I haven't a seen before. Specifically near the 6 o'clock on both the obverse and reverse. Anyone know what causes this?

3-5:00 area? Looks like the plating is missing. perhaps a coin counter damaged it. It may have gotten stuck in the machine?

My thought process is that it was probably part of the minting process, because the metal seems raised along where I drew the red line, and I can see the metal movement clearly around some of the devices.

The area mark in red is common on the cent single squeeze dies. A form of die breakdown that is very common on both sides of the cent Zincolns. That is why you see many times in the same OBW rolls. If the die is breaking down, then all the coin struck with that die and possibly others also maybe showing it. (especially if all the dies were started fresh at that same time when they started breaking down) Basically it is Die Deterioration. Note on 'IN' on the motto, the devices are getting smaller as the die is breaking down.
