On AU ebay currently a bonanza of 1925 pennies.

These beauties have undergone expert research by our team of highly trained monkeys and I can confirm that they originate from the Guangdong province in southern China circa 2016-2017.

The 1925 used to be a scarce coin in average condition and a rare coin in XF/EF and better grades, but not any more.

Thanks to ebay Australia's policy of encouraging fraud and their ethically destitute policy makers decisions - anyone can now have one? for only a hundred dollars or so because the bids are coming in faster than you can say huh?

I and others have tried to stop this money-grabbing fraudulent garbage but moderators warned me off their forums and contacting sellers is pointless.

I feel for the naive victims but so long as ebay practice caveat emptor with no option to report fake items [they do not have this] - this practice will definitely continue.

This seller has published an image which I have legally stolen to show what a real genius is capable of - step aside Einstein.

Please be wary on ebay and understand that good feedback means precisely -nothing-.

I haven't bothered with 1925 pennies since the inception of ebay.

Because there have been so many fakes over the last 15 years, it is essential that they must all be examined in hand first before making a decision to buy
UNLESS
you are very sure that the seller has the absolute best of professional reputations.

That makes it very difficult for the honest humble coin collector, if he wants to sell a 1925 penny via ebay.
No way of knowing how honest they are.

Almost all all of the best top condition genuine 1925 pennies for sale in Australia are normally found at public auctions anyway, such as Nobles, I.S. Wright or Downies.

You pay more, but that is the price you have to pay for nice condition genuine.

The 1925 1d imaged coin/s above are found by putting the item number in ebay's search field.

I have also provided the purchase page for these 1925 pennies on the Chinese website that the coins came from with name obfuscation.

Artificial aging and deliberate damage will not fool an experienced collector.
-------------------------------------------------------
Here is another currently unfolding tragedy on ebay Australia: The rare 1923 halfpenny.

263459762720

This one is a mystery and (not about the coin, but the entire situation) as the seller could quite possibly not be aware of the issue with this coin.

Top - genuine
Bottom - uh oh

I have provided comparison images of this 1923 halfpenny with an authenticated example - the problem/s are obvious.

I will forward these images to Sherlock Holmes at Baker St. for his opinion.

Keep up the great info CoinOS re these scammers! Every little bit helps as the problem is only going to get worse as these unsuspecting buyers on-sell in the future.

Notes as well? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Austral...047675.l2557

Not sure why the link isn't working but if you checkout the feedback under 'Australia 5 Pounds Coombs Wilson George VI Pre Dicimal Note, a must for invest (#263421155496)' you'll see what I mean.

Its rare in the better grades because no one collected them pre-1960's feeding frenzy.I've posted about this before,a family Friend was a Stamp/Coin Dealer post WW11 and always believed the 1925/1926 Mintage figures were incorrect, 117,000 for the 1925 was probably a 1/4(or less) of what left the Mint but at this stage of my life, who cares.
I do care about the number of Fakes on ebay, each year is worse than previous as almost every Oz. key date is copied.
Its getting to the stage where unless the Coin is slabbed its not worth the risk buying as the Chinese perfect their work.

Yes, ebay is a minefield.

I see every imaginable kind of deception every week.

Coins are photographed in tricky ways e.g. tilted to produce the illusion of luster etc..etc

I look at feedback from fake coins sold on ebay occasionally and I will read about how happy the buyer is .. if only they knew.

Preying on another's naivete is a lack of good character and I feel a certain pity for both the seller and victims.

Not all 100% feedback sellers are good people, maybe good salesmen though.

Yeah, big trap for the unwary, lots of doctored/manipulated Photo's out there.
I prefer a high rez. scan, not as much detail as a Photo but usually a lot more genuine depiction of the Coin.

Maybe someone should just flood the market by offering them at 10 dollars or less. If that doesn't ring alarm bells for buyers - it's beyond help.

I am NOT suggesting anyone here to make money by selling counterfeits.

I don't think much has changed in between these days and those days.

This ebay (& elsewhere) scamming is damaging my hobby. Most of us are not opportunistic unscrupulous thieves and are of good character.

I do possess empathy and I hate seeing large amounts of money going into the hands of a scammer, and If I can throw a spanner in the works and stop their machine - it feels good.

ebay warned me off and said my actions were naming and shaming. Well, I'm just getting warmed up - I'll create and finance a website devoted to it if I feel it'd be effective.

I love coin collecting and it's magic to me. I am a certified nerd and will spend endless thousands of dollars on little round [mostly round] bits of metal.

The people on these forums collectively (np intended) have hundreds of years experience in numismatics and they really know their stuff. The knowledge base here is amazing.

In the interests of protecting the hobby, I and others will do what we can to slow down the counterfeit traffic.

It is frustrating and galling to see scammers making hundreds or thousands of dollars out of fake or doctored coins and banknotes. I have no doubt however that some of the buyers of those fake 1925 pennies will be selling them off at $1,000 or more.

At the end of the day though the buyer has to also take some responsibility. Paying hundreds of dollars for a coin without doing proper research is asking for trouble.

It's a cliche but always accurate. If an offer seems too good to be true then it usually is.

I agree.

A collector that will spend hundreds on one coin is a serious collector. Maybe not among the half dozen rich Australian collectors who only buy MS grade perfection.

A few hundred is money to the rest of us, and obviously some homework is needed. We have recently seen 1750 bucks thrown away on a fake 1967 pattern duck - and that buyer hopefully reads this forum.

1923 Halfpennies must be certified. No matter who the seller is or what he/she says.

I recently seen a ten thousand dollar auction for a 1925 penny in good nick and politely questioned the seller if it had been authenticated.
I got condescending attitude aimed squarely at me as a response. He said a real 'Numismatist' would know it's real and it doesn't need to be authenticated - he was wrong.

China can make anything in any grade/spec all the way from Cheap as Chips to Mil spec. If they want to make a perfect 1925 penny - they will.

The fake 1925's imaged here are obvious junk - my point is that -not all are-.

I'll try to post some images in the near future to illustrate my point.

Cheers

There is another well-worn issue that is worth repeating yet again.

There is -nothing- wrong with buying a copy coin.
Nothing

It is no more wrong than the millions of famous art prints we hang on our walls because we will never own that Picasso or Rembrandt - they are all fake.

There is nothing wrong with buying a 1794 flowing hair silver dollar from China and using it as a display or a novelty. It's 100% okay.

The problem is fraud i.e. Deliberately misrepresenting tokens and copies as genuine, on sites like ebay.

I printed a very rare star note on my inkjet, and in line with RBA legal requirements - only on one side.
I can never afford that note and it - along with others are framed for display because Australian coin and banknote history intrigues and fascinates me. I read everything I can get my hands on.

If I am going to sell or auction something - very different story. I make darn certain I do all I can to know about that coin and I put it through every test I am capable of. I take crystal clear images of it and simply tell the truth.

That is what we can ask and reasonably expect of others.
