My son and I have gotten into coin roll hunting the last few months are have done every type of coin. We have mainly got our books full and are wanting to phase into just looking for old, rare, and silver coins. I am working on a list of what coins to keep for each type. I am not interested in searching for every single variety of double dies or anything like that. I want to move fairly quickly. Here is the list so far. Pennies Save: Wheats Indian Head/Flying Eagle Coppers-get thrown in a separate box I'm checking the 55s for DD and keeping an eye out for low mintage wheats. Nickels Save: Anything older than 60 Setting War Nickels aside. I was going to save the 2009's but I'm not sure if its worth the effort because I can go through a box much quicker just looking for the older styles of Jefferson's. I'm not sure it's worth looking at each newer style coin just to see if its 2009... Dimes Save: Silver/Pre 65 coins Again I'm not sure if it worth date searching dimes. All the older ones are silver anyways. If so would I just be looking for 2009? Quarters Save: Silver. There are a few from around 2009-2011 that have low mintage. I'm not really feeling the quarters are even worth doing at all with the low silver hits. Halves (my favorite) Save: NIFC 1987 and 2002+ Silver Proofs Dollars Save: Proofs Low mintage Susan B's That's my list. Does this list look similar to what you do? Would anyone have any suggestions on anything to switch up? Thanks guys, I have been lurking for a couple months, and I love the forum. I just joined today.

As far as halves, I don't keep anything except silver and no FG coins. Kinda my forte.

Your list looks reasonable. I would add Ikes to your list of coins to collect and fill a booklet (or two). Search them for errors before either releasing them to the wild, or selling them for a bit over fv.
Most of all, enjoy time spent with your son!

1972 DD LMC is one to watch for. Your other selections are very well thought out. We look forward to your participation.

I'd add: Pennies - toss all of the 1998, 1999 and 2000 into a separate cup, at the end check them all for Wide AMs. I've found a bunch of 98 and 00 ones, but not a 99 - YET. You can also search the 83 DDR and 84 Doubled Ears pretty quickly. I keep all of the 2009 nickels and dimes.

I only CRH Cents and Nickels, but here's my input: Pennies Save: Wheats/Indian Head/Flying Eagle - I think hunting these are a given(and super exciting when you find old/semikey/key specimens) Coppers-get thrown in a separate box - I'm not an advocate for this (buy silver/gold with your coins instead) I'm checking the 55s for DD and keeping an eye out for low mintage wheats. - There are a number of more common varieties to hunt for (e.g., 1998-2000 WAMs, 1972/1984/1988/1995/1997 DDOs, 1983 DDR, 1988/1989 Transitional Cents) and error coins Also, high grade cents of any year are worth holding onto. Nickels Save: Anything older than 60 - This can add up quickly and there are a number of great DDOs and DDRs through the 60s worth hunting Setting War Nickels aside. - Absolutely. Silver and old. I was going to save the 2009's but I'm not sure if its worth the effort because I can go through a box much quicker just looking for the older styles of Jefferson's. I'm not sure it's worth looking at each newer style coin just to see if its 2009... - It really comes down to what you want to collect. No wrong way to do it. Collect what you like when and how it suits you. I know you aren't into variety hunting, but the fact will be is that you will toss/pass over many more valuable finds if all you are after is old/obvious coins or silver. Again.no wrong way to do it. You choose. And enjoy the time with your son. It's great to have a new set of eyes to help with the hunt!

I would definitely keep the 2009 Nickels and Dimes. I also like the idea of saving the 2009-2012 Quarters with the lower mintages. These are great sleeper coins, especially when you consider how well quarters circulate. There are also some varieties to be on the lookout for, such as the 1982 dime missing the mint mark, along with the 2004-D Wisconsin Quarters with the extra leaf. Just to illustrate why you should save some of these coins, a roll of XF/AU 2009-P Nickels goes typically for $45-$50 on ebay. Similar rolls of 2009-Ds are going for almost $20 now.

I'm mostly a Wheatie and back looker for cents along with a few proofs, since finding those WAM's and DDO's (except for 1972 and 1995) takes quite a bit of effort to discover. I'm actually not as keen on pre-1960 Jeffersons as I'd like, since they're still only worth about 7 cents or so on ebay, and after fees, doesn't really amount to too much. But I'd keep all pre-1955 S-Mints, 1938's, 1939's, 1950's, 1942-D's, 1955-P's, and of course all War Nickels in addition to 2009's and any Buffalo/V Nickels/Proofs you may find. Dimes and quarters are basically just silver and/or proof, but I'd save slider condition 1982-P and 1983-P quarters if you can find those, and potentially AU 1960's quarters since most that survive today are VG-low VF coins. I don't think it's worth looking for 2009 dimes since they're quick to edge search. For halves, pretty much anything except for 1971-2001 coins that aren't proof or commemorative, along with 1987's and now FG's on a few dates. If the NIFC's though are less than AU, I'd pass on those. There aren't any real low mintage Susan B.'s, but I'd look out for 1979 Wide Rims along with the NIFC 1981's. For the 21st century coins, any Sacagawea from 2002-2007 along with 2013+ coins, along with Presidential dollars from 2013-2016 (all NIFC).

Thanks for all the replies guys! The info is very helpful. I love the forum and hope to contribute! I think I'm going to start saving the 2009 nickels. Dimes I'll continue to edge search.
I've got over a thousand wheats set aside. What should I look for as far as errors on those? Are the 55 DD's from a certain mint? Are there other years I should check over the errors? It would not take me much time because I already have the separated by year.
Thanks guys!

Hi Briton - there's so much to consider. Generally speaking, you will expand/contract your list based on your own personal experience. Take a look at this site: http://coppercoins.com/There are a few like this that will give you an idea about what to search for. Regarding your question on the 1955 DDO, check out what you get from the Die Variety Search at Coppercoins for the year 1955. You'll get all the identified varieties and using the advanced search tool, you can tailor the returns based on a few key selections. Good luck on the hunt!
