I know dropped letters are rare and that probably is not what this is. I have never seen this before. I have seen several with the devices going towards the rim in a straight line, but this looks like the entire letters on GOD are duplicated. Any input is appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Split Plate Doubling? That's a guess.

Edit: After looking at it again, it almost looks like some type of breakage on the die with Die Cracks.

I don't think that would explain the main lettering being filled in below whatever it is on GOD.

Just remember, it was a guess. I don't know what that is in "GOD". I will check back on this post later since it is very interesting.

It's a good guess and you may be right. I have never seen something like this and have no idea what it is.

Split plating doubling is a possibility. I have never seen anything like it.

The only other things I found similar are plating disturbance doubling and a stutter strike. It's really odd.

Maybe someone could ping Mike Diamond on this one?

Cool coin!

I did PM Mike Diamond just 1 minute ago. I sent him an email. We'll see what he has to say about this one.

I have seen several zinc cents with this effect. I wrote about it in Coin World in early 2012. These tiny letters of exposed zinc can be explained once you realize that split plating doubling actually involves two sources of stress. In addition to tensile stress, there is direct physical trauma from the copper plating snagging on sharp edges located at the margins of recessed design elements in the die face. At periphery of the obverse face, the copper plating sometimes tears as it catches on the small posts and corners of the sunken letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Rounded letters like O and G have a central post, while angular letters like T have two sharp corners at the junction of the crossbar and vertical bar. When the copper plating snags on these sharp edges it rips open, producing small, letter-shaped areas of exposed zinc.
The diminutive letters are not stretched out because this coin and the others I refer to were struck within the collar, limiting expansion.
