I have about 20 of these 3" medals or coins that depict historical figures...mostly former US Presidents and a few non-political figures like Charles Lindbergh for example. They look like bronze or some similarly colored metal. I think they were sold through the US Mint or Treasury Department.
Do these fall under the "Numismatics Umbrella" or is this question misplaced in this forum?
Does anyone know anything about these or have any in their collection?
I don't really have a specific question about them. I am just looking to learn a little more about them or find a website that might list the ones that were issued or being collected.
Actually, on second thought I do have a specific question: Can anyone tell me what they are called so I can research them more effectively?

Quote: Do these fall under the "Numismatics Umbrella" or is this question misplaced in this forum? It would fall in the Token, Medal, and Exonumia section Quote: Can anyone tell me what they are called so I can research them more effectively? I assume that you are referring to national medals. They are issued to commemorate an historic event or to celebrate a person's achievements. If you have ever heard about a "Congressional Gold Medal" being awarded, that is what these are- bronze replicas of the awarded gold medal. There are also series medals, such as Presidents, mint directors, etc. http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs...ls/index.cfm

graceoutcast...I was going to take some pics, but biokemist6's link is accurate. Those are the ones.
biokemist6...Thanks. I am a little puzzled. It looks as though they are still making the same ones that my mom bought back in the sixties. How are these ever going to amass any value as collector's items if they keep minting brand new ones? Am I missing something? Mine are 40+ years old and in extremely good condition, but certainly not as good as the ones I could buy today for $38. Thoughts on this?

that is exactly why these can't hold their value like some coins that have a limited number of coins they can mint for that particular year and once they are made that year they aren't made any longer, these medals have no such limitations on how many or how many years they can make them so as long as someone wants one they can just order them from the mint which keeps the prices down on collector value because they will be made as long as the mint wants to make them because there are no laws in place saying how many can be minted and for how many years

They would then just fall under the "neat" category....... Conversation pieces.....interesting historically.....learning tools for children and potential for bringing them into coin collecting........ worthy enough to have and keep for those reasons.....just not a high value to them. A lot of us have "low value" coins in our collections though....and we like em' for the above reasons anyway........ Look at it like this....a bronze medal is worth more than a Presidential dollar !.. Ha Ha..

Thanks all. Eaglefoot...look at the bright side. On the off chance you should live another 1000 years, your prsidential dollars have a shot at being worth something! I, on the other hand, will be stuck with these 3" bronze medals that the mint will still be making and selling for 38 bucks apiece!

.....good point !....and I hope my collection is intact, added to, and still in my family tree then!... But don't forget how many BILLIONS they are minting of these Presidential dollars.......I mean BILLIONS !.....and they aren't circulated much now, nor will they ever be really circulated....... so really.....1,000 years from now there will STILL be a plentiful supply of the Pres. Dollars in excellent condition still around too !... ....(and probably in MASSIVELY higher mintage numbers than the Bronze Medals even by THEN!.. .) I plan on living long enough to see !.... ....

They are only making the Washington and the Lincoln anymore. They have not made any of the other older presidents in quite some time. It seemed like forever for me to find this one still in the Mint packaging. even on ebay they are hard to find unless you want to buy a whole set.

These are very common in one or two of the larger coin shops here in New York, I see many older presidents in original packaging and always check them out, and wind up spending all my money on Doubled Dies and error coins, I think I will pick some up for the educational use and also the reverses are very informative about whom ever is on the obverse...
