Kennedy SMS Confusion - Coin Community Forum

Coronet1832 Valued Member United States 149 Posts	Posted 02/08/2018 6:38 pm I understand the special mint sets in the 60s, but since 2002, the TPG services seem to be inconsistent on whether a Kennedy is SMS or not. Am I missing something or misunderstanding? Report this Post to the Staff

Coronet1832 Valued Member United States 149 Posts	Posted 02/08/2018 7:50 pm Actually, I meant that Kennedys after 2002 seem to sometimes be graded as SMS and other times not. I know that since that date the mint is only striking them for collectors, but I don't understand what the SMS vs. non-SMS grade means. Report this Post to the Staff

Those ought to be unmistakable, since they were sold only in Mint sets and have a vastly different surface finish than any other Kennedys. It seems that the TPG's have vacillated over the years with the designation they've been using on their slabs. Sometimes "Satin Finish," sometimes "SMS," and sometimes with MS and sometimes SP grades. You have every right to be confused. I am. Report this Post to the Staff
