I understand the special mint sets in the 60s, but since 2002, the TPG services seem to be inconsistent on whether a Kennedy is SMS or not. Am I missing something or misunderstanding?

No, they are.

Seriously. You *do* mean that since 2002 the TPG's have been grading 1964-1967 Kennedy SMS's funny, right? Those were the only years they were issued.

Actually, I meant that Kennedys after 2002 seem to sometimes be graded as SMS and other times not. I know that since that date the mint is only striking them for collectors, but I don't understand what the SMS vs. non-SMS grade means.

Ah, the ones I know as "Satin Finish." Those ought to be unmistakable, since they were sold only in Mint sets and have a vastly different surface finish than any other Kennedys. It seems that the TPG's have vacillated over the years with the designation they've been using on their slabs. Sometimes "Satin Finish," sometimes "SMS," and sometimes with MS and sometimes SP grades. You have every right to be confused. I am.

Satin finish was used in the Mint Sets from 2005-2010. I feel it was a mistake and choose to ignore the difference.

The MS ones during the satin years were where the Satin finish was basically incomplete or missing. It's really just a look thing, a small percentage of them didn't have the satin look
