I have had this in my collection since I was a kid. How in the word does a coin end up like this? I have a theory but it's a just a good guess really. Notice both sides of the coin are different. Both sides show a different reverse side with a different year of issue. Totally freaky and no longer round but more oval shaped. What do you think?

Someone has just pressed a 1972 penny onto a 1979 one, which caused the misshapes of the 79 side

A vise job. Someone must have really squeezed it to flatten the reverse and distort it like that.

I think two pennies were laid together and placed on the NL railway track, whereupon one of them ended up like this. Regular passenger service for the NL railway ended in 1969 and freight runs stopped 1988. I have heard stories of kids doing this for kicks at the time and the dates are right.

it's known as a vise job. A few coins place in a shop vise & squeeze the squirrel out of them. You end up with design & device transfer. Sorry just a damaged coin

Is the weight that of a single penny or two?
I remember doing the train track thing at Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum with the old steam train they run there during visits as a kid. Never thought to try putting two coins together though.

Crazyb0 - 'even a child can understand'. Totally uncalled for and out of line. For shame. You get no respect.

I'm with you, gidjit. We've seen so many of these that we sometimes forget they are new to our new members. Let's give those that made disparaging remarks a one time pass. After that, they go on double secret probation!

We all know how crazy Crazy is. He's just a cranky collector who means (almost) no harm. Stick around long enough and you will get used to him. He has done his share of helping people understand minting / after minting anomalies (me included.) Personally, I'd like to meet him and have a cold drink if I ever get out to the middle west. I may even get away in one piece!
