I had three 1993 Hong Kong five dollars coins. The EDGE on one of them the lettering goes other direction. Is it an error or random?

I don't know, but I like those coins.

The reeded edges with the edge lettering in the middle is pretty neat. Reminds me of an oreo.

I am not familar with the edge lettering process of other countries, but the new Presidential dollars with edge lettering have a random orientation since the edge lettering is applied in a process separate from striking the coin.

You might get a bit more attention by posting this in the world coin section

That's pretty cool! I guess that means the collar was flipped in relation to the die positions?

I believe the lettered security edge is done with the collar die, at the same time the coin is struck, but I would've assumed it was random which way around the collar was inserted.

I agree that the edge lettering is just random. The edges are struck separately and it's a 50/50 chance
