"O" Morgans were my "O"bsession for a while. I would give this coin a BU grade. Most 1889-O Morgans were weak struck as were most of the Morgans coming from the New Orleans Mint. I believe you have an excellent example of that with this coin. The only possible downgrade would be the small rim ding under the "18" in the date and what look to be some fine hairlines marks on the coin that would probably keep it out of MS grades. In hand it might look a little different. Great coin.

I think this falls into the "AU, cleaned" category. The strike is certainly a bit weak based on the blurred detail around Miss Liberty's ear, but the reverse actually seems fairly strong. The eagle's breast is nicely rounded, not flat as I've seen on some O-mint Morgans with very weak strikes. However, there is no feather detail on the breast and the legs are flat. I think some of this detail loss is due to simple wear. Liberty's cheek also shows discoloration that indicates slight rub. The field hairlines and overall color suggest the coin was shined up a bit, maybe by rubbing with one of those "jeweler's cloths" that Coin Depot and Paul Sims refer to in their Coin World ads. Sorry Amac, but you did say both barrels!

amac44, If it were mine I would send it in to ANACS. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I agree that the coin would fall into a low AU (50-53). I could see why a coin like this from the photo may appear cleaned as it has a polished look give it's wear. No doubt a weak strike but I will tell you I have a similar Morgan, 1897-O, I picked up at a show that was similar in wear given the hair detail above the ear, lack of breast feathers, etc. and graded by the dealer as AU55 which I agreed. I sent it into PCGS and it came back as XF45....

XF and yes, it looks cleaned. I would send to ANACS. Just my opinion.

There is no way to tell if it has a special VAM or not from the photos you posted as the date is in the correct position and not doubled, and so is the mint mark.

From the pics provided, I would call this coin whizzed with a net grade of xf-45. The portrait is just way to shiny (almost miorrored), and you can clearly see the hairlines all over it. Shame as it's a semi-key date.
