A friend received this as change. The paper had a small fold during printing. Is it worth anything substantial, or just a curiosity?

Minor gutter fold, probably under $100.
When the fold is through the portrait, the price goes up. Nice find.

Ah..."Gutter Fold" I had looked on ebay sold values, but wasn't having much luck because I didn't know what the error was called. Thanks everyone! My buddy is going to throw it up on ebay and see what he gets for it. I have to admit I'm a tish jealous. Even though it's a relatively common error, I don't ever recall seeing one in the wild.

Clearly they're out there, but I've never seen one in the wild either, schmidty.
Is there a 2nd, smaller fold on this one? I'm looking at the area on the back of the note that goes through the 2nd "A" in "AMERICA" at the top.
Cool avatar, by the way.

Yep appears to be two gutter folds. The one on the back that CelticKnot pointed out. These errors are actually a lot more scarce on modern notes. Notes from the 50's to the 70's had these quite often.

Good catch CelticKnot! I was so focused on the large folds that I missed the smaller one.
re: my avatar; The reverse is the 1954-55 schedule for the local college hockey team (who I love rooting for). And Schmidt is my last name (shocking, I know). Those two things make it one of my favorite "coins" in my collection.
I think I'll offer him $30 for it. Does that sound fair? He had offered to split the proceeds if I could sell it for him, so I think he'd accept.

Quote: I think I'll offer him $30 for it. Does that sound fair? Can't hurt - give it a shot! He could probably get more for it on ebay but this would save him the trouble and put $30 in his pocket.
