There is an interesting article in this weekend's Wall Street Journal about the $2 bill. It is written by Michael M. Phillips and is titled, "What's the most useful form of cash? (Hint: It's not a $100 bill)".

More of a puff piece than anything, but it does include some interesting anecdotes about the $2 bill and Steve Wozniak as well as U-2 spy plane pilots.

Cash in hand is the most useful.

I would have to say plastic. Mainly for the simple fact that you do not have to dig for change and or the cashier doesn't have to remember how to count in order to give you change back

Edit: I forgot to mention that if nobody see's you use cash then you are less likely to be a victim of a mugging/robbery.

Read the article this morning - it basically explains, tongue in cheek, why the $2 bill can be so useful. Fun read.

I'd counter that plastic isn't really a form of cash. (Remember when the cashier would ask "cash or charge?" Those are mutually exclusive.)

But the $2? Sure, it's great for tipping and I can see the point the article is making (I did a fair amount with $2 tipping a long time ago at a bar I won't go into further detail about). I'd have thought the most useful was simply the largest bills and coins necessary to reach the desired amount, going over by the smallest amount possible when necessary. The deli I used to frequent really appreciated exact change.
Rest in Peace

Yeah don't stress @toot. I'm enjoying the discussion relevant to the WSJ article as well as the comments from folks who took the thread title literally.

Unfortunately, I don't use $2's as often as I could. People of all ages usually have some sort of positive reaction when receiving $2 notes.

Good read
