I have been sorting through my change semi-often since I was a teenager. First potential error I couldn't immediately debunk. Any thoughts?

Looks like the LMC was once encased in a coin holder, and the edges were ground to fit inside. PMD I am afraid.

I though so too initially although I was unable to find any photos of previously Encased Coins that had pieces of the lip remaining

What I mean to say is thank you for your prompt feedback. It weighs in on the higher side of 2.2 grams (VS 2.5 of other pennies) and Is less that 1 1000th of an inch larger diameter in a couple spots. If this was pressed or crimped mechanically wouldn't the diameter have stretched more? Has anyone seen similar markings on the back side on a coin that was encased?

to CCF. It does indeed look like a former Encased Cent. Being encased has broke the copper plating exposing the zinc core to the air causing zinc rot.

@BWBS, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with the others that this pattern of damage is consistent with this coin having been encased previously. If you use the CCF search function in the upper left hand part of your screen with the keywords Encased Cent RIM DAMAGE, you can see several examples for comparison.

Spend it while you can before it becomes a copper colored Hershey's kiss wrapper. Or you can use it as a test piece and take an image of it each year to see what happens to it in time.
