Probably a grease-filled die. Good eye!

I agree with @aristarchus123 about this coin most likely being Struck Through Grease. Not a lot of the inscription missing, so it is safe to spend. On the other hand, the price is cheap, so you might want to save it as an example for comparison against other coins that you find.

Lots of die polishing covering this coin. Wonder what the reverse (die) looked like. 1973D is common candidate for a recurring die subsidence error. Thanks, Doug.

It was the victim of a heavy die polishing. This reduces the size of the devices. If this had been a struck through error the devices would have been wider, or just totally gone. Why?
The deeper part of the die is what collects the grease. Whether it is a small amount or a large amount.

If the die was rubbed with a cloth, the grease maybe angled a bit, ot it maybe flat. But not the taper of the devices. They are thinner at the tops of the device and wider at the bottom. So the grease gets into the bottom of the die, the thinnest area of the devices. With this clogged, then the devices on a coin will appear wider, not thinner.

When the fields are reduced, part of the devices become thinner:

They are lower in height. That is what were are seeing on the 'L' on LIBERTY and the motto devices are also thinner, but not as reduced at the area near LIBERTY. There may have been some die dent/gouge on that area and it was reduced by polishing the edge of the die.
