Just wondering if anyone has a simpler / faster / more accurate method of checking for upset coins than mine. I have seen some collectors who place marks on the coins etc, but my method might be a bit quicker.
After twirling them between my thumb and index fingers as a rough guide, if I suspect the coin is slightly upset I place it in my homemade holders. I have one for each denomination. The coins fit snugly in the cardboard slot, just tight enough to prevent accidental rotation, but loose enough to allow me rotate the coin to my predetermined marks. On each side of the clear plastic I mark some standard reference points for a non-upset coin. The obverse is usually the tip of the neck and the reverse depends on which coin or denomination I am checking. After aligning one side, I flip the holder to see if it is rotated. The slots are shallow enough so I can grip the coin to adjust and remove it.
I have a separate little chart with radiating lines depicting each 5 degree mark to check the actual angle
Please excuse the crude pics, and my crude holders.
Hans

Given I am the Coinvirgin doesn't count for much, (zero)
Personally I use a mirror. But like I said I'm the Coinvirgin.

If you system works for you then it's all good!
Rest in Peace

A mirror works very well. Put the coin in a flip (2 X 2) but do not staple it. Make sure that the coin is level when you place the bottom edge of the flip on a flat surface. Hold it with your thumb and forefinger so the coin stays in the flip. Put it in front of a mirror.

I like Hans's method, especially when it comes to accuracy!

I do it like this http://goccf.com/t/274279
Use a paper clip not staples for the test and than staples for a permanent seal.

I had a little device for $1 coins but I don't use it much - normally I just use my fingers to get a rough idea.

Me too. If I'm in any doubt after that, I pop it in a 2X2 to reach a final conclusion.
