Change of pace as I found this 1976 D Jefferson nickel and I believe I am seeing DDD around LIBERTY and the date. the 9 on the date is extremely thick. 176 at also thick.

It does seem a bit larger than normal:
I agree with you that you are seeing disfiguring from die wear on your coin. Note the tail of the '9' is thinner than the outside edge devices. Same on the '6' but just backwards, the tip of the tail is wider than the base of the 6. Die wear flows to the edge of a coin. I would guess the die is in the LDS die state before the flow lines start. Still a lot more coins will be struck these dies.
Normal coin for this year:

OK, Lets open class again with this large Image I posted. Note the date area. It looks altered a bit. What happened? Hub doubling, Coin contact or Machine Doubling?

So explain the reason why you think it is that? (not saying you are right or wrong)

Die deterioration, die flow and polishing. as the metal has flowed outwards devices approach the rim off set. Normal dies are milled with a slight bevel at the lip edge of the die face and rim offset, this makes the devises ahallower near the edge.

Crazyb0 is correct on the OPs coin. The last question was about the large image I posted to compare with his coin. An anomoly on the date.

Mr. Coop, my answer to your question considering the picture you posted is Machine Doubling. That can be seen at the top of the 9,7 and six.

The answer I was look for involved how do we know it was MD versus hub doubling. The answer, the devices are not enlarged. The devices are the same size as usually, but the MD make a mark on the devices and altered them after the strike. That was the point each of you were correct, but sometimes seeing the reason with the image help us to under stand better.

I was thinking the same thing, but I forgot about this thread and just looked at it today. Sorry about that.
