This is a small perfect circle with a small "hole" in the center, like a donut or a thick-sided letter O or a zero. It's a little above and to the right of Jefferson's left eye, about the same diameter as the iris of his eye.

It appears to be impressed into the background field, possibly debris that got between the planchet and the die. There are no design features of that exact shape & size on either the obverse or reverse, that I can find.

Any idea of what it actually is, how it got there, and if it is something cool enough to be worthwhile to send to a grading service?

Thanks in advance for any replies - Greatly Appreciated!

It's environmental damage. It could be anything. Any type of corrosive acid/chemical will easily damage/destroy the surface of a coin.

It is most likely post strike damage. In Jefferson's hair there is a smaller indentation that looks a lot like a crater. It makes me think this coin took a hit.

@gcm48, sorry but it seems unlikely to be worth sending to a TPG.

gcm48- For future reference, always post pictures of the entire coin front and back then zoom into the problem area. The folks here will be able to provide you with a more comprehensive and detailed explanation.

Methinks someone has a lot to learn about the true worth of error coins. The only person getting rich from pocket change are those writing books about it. Then there's me, mine are free, no wonder I'm poor...

Thanks for the responses. I figured it was nothing to get excited about, but I'm not experienced enough to know for sure.

Point taken USSID18 - I will include full-images of both obv & rev as well as detail close-up in future posts.

Everyone's comments are very appreciated!

PS: Crazyb0 - Thanks for the links!
