I bid on, and won, this group of twenty uncleaned ancients to get one coin. It is the middle one in the bottom row; an antoninianus of Aurelian, radiate bust right, with Aurelian holding a spear and shield. I didn't recall seeing this bust type before for Aurelian. There were no examples on VCoins. I did a quick search of RIC, Volume V, Part 1, and found four possible candidates: #247, 248, 253 and 326. The seller didn't include reverse photos so I won't know what it is until I receive the coins. I thought I'd share this interesting coin with my fellow CCF members. Paul Bulgerin

@PB, yes looks like it could be a good lot. I look forward to seeing some "after" pics when you have had a go at them.

I think I own 3 'ants' of Aurelian This one I really splurged on ..... But I wiped it off before I photographed it ! I simply had to have it for 4 reasons 1) It was a lefty 2) It was nice and heavy for a bronze 'ant' 3) Well the spear and shield say it all ! 4) Its olive green !! AE Antoninianus Aurelian Obv IMP AVRELIANVS AVG Radiate cuirassed bust left holding spear and shield Rv IOVI CON SER Aurelian receiving globe from Jupiter each holding scepter uncertain mint mark in exergue 4.93 grams 22-3mm RIC 260 varient I paid close to a Mr Franklin for this one ! That is by far and away the most I ever shelled out for an 'ant'. They usually just don't float my trireme the way this one does

Those left-facing bust Aurelians are attractive coins! Such a distinctive bust type.

The lot of coins arrived today. The Aurelian was the reverse type I thought it would be. Unfortunately, the reverse is pretty shot. I took a chance on a lot that only showed one side and I guess I lost. Fortunately, I only paid about a dollar per coin for the lot. The rest of the coins are nothing special, although a few might clean up a bit. To top it all off, the seller mailed the coins in a padded mailer and put tape right over the coins. Yuck.

Oh well Nothing ventured nothing gained ......
It is surprising the way some people ship their coins. A favorite seller of mine in Germany uses more tape than I care to deal with ! But that is of course over the fancy plastic flips he uses. Another seller from the same region uses no tape at all and all of her coins are in lovely little bags ! Unfortunately the large coins tend to spill out on the journey ! The upside is she uses DHL which has delivered from Munich to my door in 48 hrs when things go just right. The last batch all but the two Britannicus ae's had freed themselves. (they were all I really cared about !) I think it rather revealing just how a seller treats the merchandise.

In the interest of protecting this seller's reputation, I should add that while the rest of the coins were all taped to the packaging, the Aurelian was in a little Ziploc bag. That I did appreciate.
