I dumped out my pile of junk pennies and took a picture. Then I gave them a wash in Dawn and they look exactly the same except wet.

When I was coin roll hunting I used to have a pile about like that. Just looking at it makes me feel like I should go wash my hands.

I'm able to put them in rolls and return to the bank, if not I would probably drop them in the parking lot a few at a time to make some ones day.

That looks exactly what I pull out of the CoinStar trays! I think others leave it just for me, so I can have something to post on the CoinStar thread!

That's a great idea. I'll take them to Coinstar to discourage other Coinstar searchers.

I am keeping all my damaged coins in a bag, then later on this summer when I can do this outdoors, I will experiment with cleaning process. Not so much a cleaning process, but a process to get the top few layers of oil and dirt off. If I screw up an already damaged coin, then no real loss. I have a small bag of wartime nickles that look like somebody put them in an oil drain pan and left them in the sludge for a few years. I tried soaking one of them in just plain old boiling distilled water, but without having to rub the junk off it didn't work, I certainly won't use my well water, it's just plain bad, too much alkaline. Have gotten a few ideas for cleaning from this forum, but no way I am using acetone inside during the winter.

This reminds me of my impaired proof collection. Here's my favorite so far:

Wow, Meraxes! That's pretty sad! Reminds me of the low-grade/damaged/cull War Nickel set I threw up on ebay one time... and I actually ended up selling the set for $15 or so + shipping!
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Here's my favorite so far: At least he has character? Yes, my voice went up two octaves as I said that.

That's awesome! PCGS recently put out an article about low grade registry sets. It was a thinly veiled advertisement for their services, but a neat idea, nevertheless. @jbuck Lol! Hey, it's a one-of-a-kind...
