I ran across this 1945 Wheat penny in a bag of change. Looking at the 5 it is clearly off. Since I'm new to collecting I'm trying to find out if this is common, rare or some where in between. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

@nickg, sorry but the 5 is just plain damaged. No premium and actually a fairly common type of PMD. Still a wheatie and worth saving though.

Just damage from a circulation hit, I'd guess.

I'm thinking it is damaged from a vending machine. Why? Because the device altered is parallel to the rim. So probably a victim of a bubble gum machine.

Something mechanical altered the coin.

I realize this topic is old but I felt this picture needed to be grouped with the original OP's picture. The defect pictured on that coin was considered to be mechanical damage. My example is same year, same type of deformity, but different mint.

Coincidental damage or.....?

Same answer. Damaged by a Gumball Machine.

I've added new images to my selection since 2018. But note the affected areas are the same. Same answer. The coin is damaged. These machine were all over the place. Gum ball for a cent then, today a larger gumball for a quarter. As a kid, it was something to seek to get, because sometimes they had prizes in there also. (Stuff that later one were found in Cracker Jack Boxes. I know, I'm showing my age now)

Yes, same kind of damage, look how the damage extends above the 5 following the curvature of the coin almost exactly.

Nevermind about "grouping" coins together. You should have posted your coin in a thread of it's own. You will get more replies that way, and the thread you posted on is over three years old. Never a good idea. If you felt you had to "group" your coin with another coin, start your own thread a post a link to the other posting. Thank you.
