American-Liberty-225th-Anniversary-Gold-Coin---Scratch-Or-Error?

First time poster...long time lurker. Buy a bit of everything...and yes...sometimes guilty of not even opening my purchases from the Mint. Well - finally got around the opening my $1740 Gold coin and was disappointed at the quality I found (BUT...This one has me wondering if its an error? I've examined this with a magnifying glass and my camera and it doesn't look like a "scratch"...I'm going to send it off to PCGS since I have some credits w/ them...but before I do wanted to get some opinions. Rare variety...or bad just bad quality?

Thanks for your time in advance!

Interesting. It looks like the line is cameoed as well.
That takes me away from thinking it may be a struck through error.

It will be interesting to see what PCGS has to say.
I need to learn more about how modern proof dies are made, to understand how this 'error?' has come about.

There may be a potential increase in value.
Rest in Peace

Interesting... but I think we're going to need to see the entire coin outside of its holder.

From what I can see, it looks like a typical spike head die crack -- except I don't see any evidence of the die having deteriorated to that point. There may be evidence of that elsewhere on the coin.

Rest in Peace

Thanks all for your help. Here are a couple photos that show the full coin.

This girl looks like she's been in a fight (everyone see the scar on her face too?) Hopefully these help determine what I have here.

2 more of the full coin. I really don't want to break it out of the holder so just going to send it in to the pro's. I have confirmed that the big spear in her head is not a piece of lint/etc w/ my loupe. Fingers crossed she's the only one like this in the world :).

The holder is not sealed, assuming it is the same type used for the silver medals, ASE, commemorative coins, etc. Just run your fingernail along the seam and carefully open.

Is the entire surface of the die prepared (sandblasted) for frosting prior to the shiny part being polished? If so, I can see how the die crack might be frosted as well.

Well the last obverse pic looks like the scratch is on the inside of the capsule..open it up. Not a big deal and eliminate this possibility immediately

If it IS a die crack then I really doubt only one coin resulted...probably would have been reported by now

Just remove it from the holder and take images. No need to break the holder, it comes apart.

to the CCF.

You have received some good advise ... but its your call on what to do with the coin.

Be aware that no TPG will accept it in the mint issued capsule ... so if you truly intend to send this in for a grading opinion you will need to release it.

Photos of the raw coin will go a long way to help us help you.

Curious... Then how to TPGs deal with "First Strike" coins sent to them in the unopened OGP? Or is opening the package something they do only for such consideration?
