another old family item...

A neat medal from the Holston Male Institute (1871). Here's a link to some information I found about it. Two images attached as well. Looks like it would benefit from the conservation process at NGC. Maybe it would remove that gunk. Needless to say ... I won't mess with it myself. Based on the wear in the chain hole at the top ... I'd say it was worn for several years.

The Holston Male Institute is mentioned in the link below.

Very interesting!

I wonder if an acetone soak would help with that spot.

I've read (on one of these forums) that's a fairly safe thing to do. Will it change the color/tone of the silver?
Rest in Peace

No it should have no effect on metal. It may not remeove it, depends on what the gunk is, may take an overnite soak.

No. However, the metal being "protected" under the gunk means it may not have the same level of tone as the rest of the medal. With that being said, I think a mismatched toning spot is still preferable to the gunk.

I agree with jbuck & Crazybo.

I just got this medal and it had some issues. I bought it looking like this online.

In hand it had what looks like the same green stuff as yours.
I tried Verdi-care first and it still came out like this. ( still a little wet )

I did the acetone soak and then repeated the Verdi-care and while it is not completely dry yet, it now looks a lot better. The acetone took away my green stuff and the Verdi-care gave it a finish I suppose.
Far as I know, Verdi-care is generally for brass, bronze and copper coins. Silver is another matter.
I would try the acetone.

Looks familiar.

What you have posted is a standard Egyptian Magic Coin.

The Helen Trent medal is loosely based on the Egyptian Magic Coin.

It appears that you have restored your medallion to the state when the seller photographed it.
