Just a cool bit of family history from during the Civil War. My dad always thought it was a Texas Rangers badge, but the earliest one on record is from around 1881. So, likely a Houston County Texas Law Enforcement badge. I'll have to check with my father, but I believe Mr. Chester went on to become a judge.

Two images ... with different contrast.

J.P. Chester shows up in Texas Veterans Civil War records of 1861-1864. He does not show up as a Texas lawman during the 1835-1899 period in the records I have. I cannot find his grave site.

Most likely it was a badge he made, or had made, that he wore to some of the many veterans reunions that were held following the Civil War up until about 1950.

Very nice item!

Very interesting piece and thanks for sharing. Does it have a pin attachment on the other side?

Spence - My father still has it. I think it is more of a clip. Perhaps as suggested ... it was more of a Veterans reunion piece. I'll see if I can dig up more information from my father.

westernsky - can you send me a screen shot of the information you found ... or a link? All I can find is pay to see ...

This link allows you to search for Civil War veterans and is free. Information is rather basic however it is a starting point. https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/soldie...database.htm
