Hello CoinCommunity users,

Someone found this coin inside a wall and asked me to tell if it is fake or real. Unfortunately I am not really passionate about numismatics but I have found a great community here and think you can tell if the coin is real.

Its weight is 27.4g .

My 2 cents it's fake but what do I know ?

Worth taking better photos ?

Thank you in advance.

Yes, the coin is a counterfiet. The rim and denticles are wrong for the date. It looks like it could be a cast copy and someone tried to remove the cast bumps.

Overweight by a half gram, with rim, lettering, stars all looking wrong - it's a pretty safe bet this one's bogus.

Coins back then were not struck with a restraining collar which is why modern coins have a raised flat rim like this coin. That alone will tell you it is fake. Also the design details are quite a bit off.

Welcome to CCF! I'd write COPY on it and put it back in the wall.

Interesting idea, could make for a "fun" find for someone eventually.

I would probably keep it as a curiosity, but make sure it is somehow marked as illegitimate.

If it's silver, I would sell if for melt value. No need for anyone to ever have to deal this fake moving forward.

That would be my guess. If they were going to spend the $$$ on silver they might have tried to do a little better job. (You know you're fakes are weak when even I can spot them.)

99% of the ones found/posted here, seem to turn out fake/counterfeits/copies. We did see a real one last year, even I was surprised at that one.
