Saw this for sale recently, and snapped it up for my collection of Canadian numismatic oddities... What were they promotional items for PCGS showing off the hard slab, or RCNA for a show?

I have one of those around somewhere. Older though, maybe 2012 or so.

Yes, they were promotional items. I got one for free-our club hosted the show and they were handed out in a club meeting. At least I think that is how I got it.

Normally they're included in the RCNA registration kit; that's how I have them from the last three conventions. I'm not sure when this started. *or purchased individually at/after the show

They were a kind of exchange of service between the RCNA and PCGS for advertisement fees in the Journal, they sell these slab plus the PCGS 1967 dollar bill at a lot of GTA shows for almost costs to attract new collectors.

Aside from the slab, is there anything special about that 50c?

Nothing special, just a regular 50 cent piece

Paul Johnson, of the RCNA saw this thread and sent me a note: Quote:They were first done in 2015 for the RCNA convention in Halifax. The sample slabs were included in the official registration kits that members could purchase. There were about 125 registration kits sold plus another 40 for sale. The RCNA did the same for 2016 in Ottawa and in Boucherville for 2017. The number of these sample slabs are about 175 or less for each of these years. The RCNA is planning to do a similar sample slab for the 2018 convention in Mississauga. They are a nice keepsake of each convention and quite affordable. We do have a few remaining sample slabs for 2016 and 2017 at $15.00 each... none remain for 2015. The sample slabs were prepared in lieu of services. You are free to provide this "official" information on the Coin Community website. Thanks very much, Paul Johnson Executive Secretary Royal Canadian Numismatic Association

I ordered a 2017 sample slab, shame that they did not use the Canada 150 commemorative 50-cent coin.
Now the hunt is on for a 2015 Halifax sample slab...

Nice Had I seen that you were looking for one, I would have told you Citadel had a Halifax sample!

I'm not sure exactly what the significance of this slab and designation.

It would be like the FUN show asks or pays PCGS to slab a US 50 cent coin with a special label for the show to promote new collectors
