Hi all,
I'm usually on the stamp forum and my coin knowledge is very limited but I found this pair amongst a stamp collection I bought at auction, they both weigh 25g.
Are they just cast copies?
thanks

Realeswatcher that is the problem with Cobs and Dod Mundos pieces how can you confirm they are possibly of the period. Since the weights are near 25 grams my guess is what the generalist will call Pewter which is an alloy of tin with ~15% lead with sometimes antimony and copper. I have seen and they are contemporary GNL Portaits of Tin with just antimony as we record in GNL but these weights are around 18-20/21 grams. Actually next Sunday I am posting a near pure tin GNL Type 1 on ebay.

So we see sharp surfaces with sharp lettering so not a cast but pewter as I suspect tin with lead added to raise the overall flan close to 26.5 grams and STRUCK.

But alas realeswatcher all this means NOTHING as we codemn it as a $0.50 Modern Forgery although the surfaces are EASILY over 100 years old and if we find Sb or Cu - still its gets us NOTHING ... LOL.

To me, they have the look of silver coins that've been through a fire - the one on the right in particular appears to have blobs of molten metal deposited between the "V" and the left globe.

Lucky Cuss could be as the image is so poor to me they look like incuse areas rather than blobs. However - does it matter. LOL.

That was my first impression, also, but the more I looked at it, the more I felt they were raised. That's why I prefer to see coins like this imaged with a slight angle to them rather than head on.

But if those are in fact cavities, then the possibility of the coins being shipwreck salvage would bear consideration.
