Today I found a 1972 RAM set in a local shop. It looks pretty good, with a bit of toning on the bronze coins. However, one thing I've noticed--I see some hazing on the cupronickel denominations: 5c-50c. Most likely it's a film transfered from the vinyl of the case to the coin surface. Has anyone tried to remove this, and/or store the coins outside the folder? It's rather handy these can be removed (carefully) from their pouches--a "marsupial" mint set!

Thanks for your advice!

G'day,
a lot of collectors move these coins from the RAM packaging to mylar-lined 2x2 as soon as they receive them.
I don't know when, but I assume at some point since 1966, RAM started using archive-quality materials, but I don't know when that might be.
Those plastic wallets were a pretty nifty souvenir in their day. They were made up to 1983. Then they went to "blister packs": the transition might be compared to "going monotreme", from marsupial.

LOL Peter! Alcohol seems to lift off this film without damage. What a relief! Next they'll be moved to non-PVC capsules.

Kurt, I hope you picked up the 1972 set. The 5¢ alone in Unc is worth $35.00. It's the lowest mintage 5¢ & the hardest to find in any condition.

I think I've gotten lucky because dealers here don't really care to sort out rare dates or varieties.
Upon closer inspection, it looks like the 50c was damaged mechanically. There are two straight scratches on the obverse which couldn't have been done by the vinyl pouch. However, the 5c, 10c and 20c look very nice.
