My wife's grandmother had this coin / jewelry and gave it to my wife. my wife had no interest in it so she gave it to me. my question is what should I do with it: A take to a jeweler or someone to remove the loop and include it in my collection. B Give it to my daughter - she doesn't want it now but some day she might like it. c sell it. what's it worth? d something else. what grade would you give this? I'm at about EF but I don't know much about this particular coin and how its graded. much thanks mike

Numismatic value has been destroyed by the attachment. That can't be corrected, even if the hasp was removed.
It's worth gold value and maybe $20 or so for a neat item.

My suggestion is B (maybe not now, but eventually)--this piece has such a great family history that exceeds the numismatic/bullion value.

As a family heirloom, I'd wear it. It has a great design and a story to go with it.

Don't try to fix it, that will only damage it (further) -- leave it as-is. Even if your daughter and wife don't want it, someone will -- it looks great as a piece of jewelry. It's worth slightly more than bullion as moxking said so if you choose to sell it, I'd consider it an ebay item rather than "junk" for a coin dealer. After fees, you'd probably get the same amount as junk though.

I'd sell it at the best price you can get and buy something for your wife and kid.

Family heirloom. Keep it in the family and pass it down to your daughter when she is old enough to appreciate it and understands who it came from.

Imho as is it would bring about $80-$100 over melt (current melt is $160) if you sold it on ebay. Just my opinion. Nice coin. I would keep it in my family because its sentimental value would outweigh the monetary value.

I agree with the keep it labeled for later opinion group ; but I'm not 100% convinced the coin is genuine - not that it matters based upon our recommended disposition.
