This is the 1st of 2 coins I was waiting for. Hoping to get the second one tomorrow.

I love the toning on the obverse and is a big reason I picked this up from Finn last week.

Philip I (The Arab)
Reigned from 244-249 AD
AR Antoninianus.
RIC 28C SEAR 8922
Obverse: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right
Reverse: ANNONA AVGG Annona standing left holding corn ears over modius and cornucopiae.

Philip-I-AR-Antoninianus

Annona, the figure on the reverse, was the personification of the grain supply in the city of Rome during ancient times. Hence the corn she is holding.

This coin was kind of a propaganda piece made to ease the citizens of Romes minds. Kind of a reassurance that their grain supply was safe despite the riots that were occurring in Egypt at the time due to increasing taxes.

I gotta say thanks again to member Finn.

Just wanted to share, but as always all comments welcome.

Thanks for looking...Mont.

Glad he's got a new home now! That was the first "silver" Antoninianus I ever bought. It was bright white in the auction photos, but picked up the toning during a lengthy and protracted delivery process in the summer heat. I love the toning, but it looked odd between a blast white Gordian III and a blast white Otacilia Severa.

Here's the coin that bumped him out of place:

Philip-I-AR-Antoninianus

Philip has always intrigued me, as different historians seem to paint very different pictures of him. Some call him a tyrant who murdered Gordian for his own glory, while others paint him as a rather meek and indecisive individual... He is known to have taken no action against one insurrection, letting the rebellious soldiers kill their own elected usurper. When Jotapian revolted in 249, Philip begged the Senate to let him just resign--it was Decius who pressured him into action.

It has also been suggested that Philip converted to Christianity, as persecutions nearly halted during his reign, and he is recorded as attempting to attend a Sunday mass, from which he was turned away for his sins.

Thank you for the info on Philip. I did do some research and was kinda confused about him. Like you said it seems some portray him as a tyrant while others made him sound not so bad. I guess it is what you want to believe.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had something to do with the death of Gordian. Well him or his brother at least. His brother seemed to be a major player in Philip I rise to power.
Rest in Peace

Both nice examples. I've thought of collecting a number of his issue, but other coins jump up and snatch my cash.

Excellent pick-up, Mont. Indeed the toning is great - the summer heat Steve describes served it well.
