Super excited to have picked up this coin for $83. The 1857 Half Cent was the last of the U.S. Half Cents. That is the lowest mintage for a Half Cent since 1802. Mint records showed that there were 2,200 1831 Half Cents minted. It is believed that the 1831 mintage of business strike Half Cents were dated 1832 as none are know to exist. Only proof strikes of 1831 Half Cents are known. This coin had a lower mintage than the 1793 Half Cent. Your thoughts on grade and problems would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! If this is really the coin you bought & is not just an uploading mistake, then this is about 10x rarer (mintage wise) than the 1857 cent, this with only a mintage of 35,180.

Oops is right. Thought this was the cent, but it is actually the Half Cent. Anyhow, instead of the 333,456 mintage of the cent, the 1857 Half Cent was the last Half Cent issued in the United States with a mintage of just 35,180. Made a big mistake, but it seems like it was still a great deal!

Very strange surfaces. Blotchy and multicolored plus high point brass rub.
You buy some great coins, but I would have passed on this one.

83 bucks is a killer deal. I would do that all day.

AU sharpness, but she's been abused by something chemical or natural. The die diagnostics are a match but the surfaces are bizarre. Usual weak strike at K10-K11 and mushy LIBERTY, just like all other 1857 Half Cents. I'd recommend slabbing, but it doesn't look like the common Chinese fake from the no-no site as seen here (note the fake's odd rims on the obverse and reverse and compare the letters in LIBERTY between this one and OP's, as well as the position of the hair curl over the 8 in the date.)

Given the sharpness of the denticles and devices, would you say this is an early die state (EDS) strike?

AU-53. That blotchy toning looks to me like something was removed from the surface that prevented those areas from toning. Great deal!
