Can someone help me out with the Red Book price for an xf or au value from the RedBook for this coin. I am looking at paying 25 bucks for it. Thanks.

RedBook EF40 is $35 AU50 is $80. You should be able to find an EF coin for around $25 as the RedBook guide runs a little high. HTH

hanks. The one I got looks ms to me but I dont know about it being dipped or altered. I figure 25 is a good price for a coin with great eye appeal. Will post pics when I get home.

The 30-S is pretty affordable in XF-AU. Good luck in your search!

Here is a scan of the coin - I can't seem to find any wear on this coin. I checked the Red Book grading standards and I can't find any wear on the high points. is there any chance of a weak strike? I would say that it this is not an MS coin it is going to be a slider (AU 55+) Any thoughts? Image: scan0001.jpg82.15 KB

Nice pickup for $25. Much better than EF.

Looks very close to AU-58 to BU. Do you have a reverse photo? Scans are tough to grade but I can't see any wear on the scan you posted. Looks to be possible or borderline Full Head also. Good find.

Wow. I'm jealous of your find. Congratulations! I paid way more than that for mine, and it appears to be a similar grade. Has this coin been dipped/cleaned?

I will try getting a closer pic of the coin. In my opinion I bought it thinking it was a good deal for 25 bucks. I believe there is some wear on the lower left hand corner of the shield, where the stars form the circle, however I don't have much experience with these coins. I can't seem to find much wear on the "traditional" high points.
I am not sophisticated enough to tell if this is a dipped coin, any pointers on telling if a coin is dipped?
Thanks.

Dipping tends to eat a little of the surface so the coin at first, appears as nice as a BU one. In a short time, the cleaning may turn another color and loose its luster. If the coin appears not to be in a new 2X2 then it could be not cleaned recently. Cleaning with a polish tends to leave light hair line scratches on the coin from the abrasion. Also the same with the first cleaned affect looking BU and then later may turn a less dull looking. This you can see with a Lupe/scope with a light at the right angle. But if it appears that it has been in 2X2 for a longer time and still looks that way it could just look that way from not being dipped/polished. Without closer images it's all a guess right now. Just a few ideas to ponder. Still a very nice coin though. A grading service would be able to tell. ANACS would be my choice because some grading services will charge you and body bag the coin. Where as ANACS might give it a net grade if it has been detected as cleaned/polished.
