I have this penny from either 1952 or 1953. the obverse is crisp and looks normal but the reverse is odd.

one thing that throws me off is the coin has been cleaned so I keep looking at it and I can't determine what is going on. the ADA of Canada is as crisp as the obverse but pretty much everything else on the reverse is mushy. one thought is that a pool of acid was left on the reverse and it didn't get to all of the letters of CANADA and the left side of the 1. or it is a strike through of some sort but it sure doesn't look like any strike throughs that I have

all comments welcome. thanks in advance!

Looks like it is muddled in some kind of gunk - try soaking that cent in Acetone for a few hours and see what happens.

Did you weigh the coin?

Agree, try soaking it first.

definitely no gunk on it. someone already cleaned it which gave it a weird colour.

I did weigh it. it weighs 3.15 gr and when I compared it to my blank planchets from the same era (only because I have several with the weight listed) and they ranged from 3.15 gr to 3.28 gr so it is under weight but within mint tolerances.

It just does not look right... this is one of those coins that you have to examine in hand...
