..I'm super excited to coin roll hunt through my first ever $100 box of nickels tomorrow! I have already did 4 boxes of Pennies and found some nice coins bit I'm ready for other coins now. I have always found Nickles and Quarters to be the most aesthetically pleasing common mint coins in USA, Nickels being my favorite of the two. So yeah I'm somehow really excited like a kid on Christmas for tomorrow haha! I have one question. What are the average chances of finding pre 46' Nickels or especially War Nickles? I really would love some old Buffalo nickels as well. One neat thing is that I have found both a 1947 D and 1960 D nickels in F or and VF conditions from mere pocket change at a local Dollar General market. So if my luck is that good with a $100 box I should find some real goodies right? I'm getting a phone soon with a decent camera.. I'll post images then I hope.

With a box of nickels, I find it you will find on average 1-2 War Nickels per box, and maybe a buffalo every few boxes. Pre-46 non-war nickels you should find at least a few. Good luck hunting!

to the CCF Great fun you will have with your search tomorrow ... and in a full box you should find something of interest ... assuming it is not a brand new box of current dated coins. Quote: What are the average chances of finding pre 46' Nickels or especially War Nickles? Hopeful I can answer some of that from the statistics of a modern nickel roll searcher who has kept detailed records ... I'm now at 382,800 nickels searched .... and you can find very detailed summaries in this forum with the search function. I have found ... on average ... 1 war silver nickel every 2,836 coins searched ... so not 1 per box but close. I have found ... on average ... 1 Buffalo nickel every 5,392 coins searched ... about 1 per 3 boxes .... so this is a real treasure. Quote: I'm getting a phone soon with a decent camera.. I'll post images then I hope. Looking forward to whatever you can share.

Thanks for the answers guys. So it's a rare nickel every 2 boxes or so deal with 2000 nickels a box. By the way dang 380000+ nickels!! that's like 141 boxes!! You probably have quite the collection going on.

Well, he's not nickelsearcher for nothin'! I've done one box and found one War Nickel, no Buffalos. I didn't find any "key dates". I would like to do more, but I have yet to find a bank friendly to that without having an account.

I roll hunted nickels for years, in the end only edge-searching for War Nickels. Several years back, I dumped 1,000+ 1946 and newer Jeffersons and dateless Buffalos, really not interested in them myself, but hoping to spur future collectors. Good luck!

Hello all. I just finished searching my entire $100 Nickel Box. I attempted to take pictures with my laptop camera and the quality is so bad ya can't see the date or details at all, ugh. Next Wednesday I'll have a worthy machine for capturing pics I'll post em then. I'll at least be able to tell you all what I found. I found no War Nickels as you guys said I wouldn't... nor any Buffalos. I did find.. 2x 1940 P's in f12 condition, 2x 1941 P's one in f12 the other in G4(meh) and 1951 D, 1952 EF40, 1954 P, 1955 D, 1956 D, 3x 1957 D's, 1958 D, 1959 D, etc basically got the 50s nigh completed. My favorite find is a beautiful 1962 D in AU50.

Don't give up hope. You may stumble upon some extremely good boxes later. In my opinion your box was below average. It happens. Keep working at it. The more you search...the more you find. Quote:I found no War Nickels as you guys said I wouldn't... nor any Buffalos. There's really no way of knowing what's going to come out of a box of nickels unless it's an uncirculated solid date box. I've found 14 full date buffaloes in one box & as many as 7 War Nickels out of one box.

Quote: The more you search...the more you find. Quite true! That is why I am not finding anything. As long as you are getting boxes at face value from banks, the only real expenditure is time and there are some nickels that would be well worth the time to find.

I'd double check that fine 1962 D for DDO / DDR. You could have a doubled goodie!

Could you explain what your looking for as far a appearance? Does the silver look different enough to tell? I still don't think I'd just look for silver personally. I would hate to miss the Buffalo's and V nickels...

Quote:I did not think the War Nickels looked different enough to edge search... Could you explain what your looking for as far a appearance? Does the silver look different enough to tell? I used to cut the silver out plastic Brinks rolls at work (mostly quarters & dimes). When I got bored enough I would do the nickels too. Unless the War Nickels are high grade, they tend to be much darker than other nickels. Sure, sometimes you just got a dark nickel, but usually an older nickel. And for sure you would miss other good stuff like you mentioned.
