I have put at least $120 worth of paper money into machines for quarters and have never got one older than 1965. I reckon it may be because the silver content and weight is higher in pre 65's and the turn gear mechanism these days may not recognize the older ones. Is it nigh impossible to get older quarters from machines?

If so that would mean my only chance is coin roll or metal detecting etc eh?

Sorry I always ask questions, I have just been itching to know how this situation works.

Thanks in advance.

Most of the "exchange" machines, car-washes , laundromats and game rooms are almost always "recycled" quarters. These places keep just enough plus a bit extra to keep their tills full and they do search any they "turn in to the bank. An old friend owned a gameroom, he gave his 10 year old $20 of quarters to look through all the bank dump stuff for silver, and so so all the other places. I got paid $300 in quarters for a job I did for him! Guess what, post-kid...

I don't think that coin dispensing machines are picky with what they dispense, just what is put in to be made change from. So, you may actually get silver this way. That's just a thought, though, and not based on any experience.

Coinstar machines seem to be a nice place to frequent to look for silver. The older silver coins will most often get rejected into the bottom tray and some people don't check that when cashing coins in. There is an entire topic devoted to it:

I doubt it could be the most lucrative way to search, and I've never found silver that way, but I have gotten a proof from a change machine- a 2004-S Iowa.

Small casinos can be a good source for silver quarters. Play with coins only, no credit, as the machines don't separate the silver out.

Although I don't go more than once or twice a year, I've always found at least one silver.

Hmm, it looks like I have some work to do.
The problem is that the only practical place with vending machines is my school, and I'd rather avoid the funny looks. Perhaps after school hours...
I also know for a fact that they're not too accurate, though not always in a bad way. A couple of years ago, a friend borrowed a dollar from me, which the machine ate. When I went back and hit the coin return a couple minutes later, it gave me $2.

Off topic but I broke open a pool table that was in my basement for years and found a boatload of silver and promptly spent it....I was 10. I also tried to rob a wishing well in a grotto of a church. Had my T-shirt rolled up full of wishes. I was 5. Find old vending machines, jubeboxes, etc, that haven't been used in years. Always on the bottom or even in the bin.

When I started collecting in the early 70s silver was already a rare find in circulation. If you come across any 90% silver today, it's likely because some kid got into Dad's coin stash and spent it at the 7-11. However, 40% silver halves can still sometimes turn up in bank rolls, as well as silver-alloy War Nickels.
