Hi all,

Picked this up last week. It appears a solid metallic material has bonded with the surface. The area exhibiting the best detail of contrast between field and affected field is along the border of the Eagle's breast. I don't know if I have captured it with my camera. I also submitted photo of Obverse. As you can see there are scattered flecks of foreign matter across it's surface... a single fairly large piece lies directly to left of the words 'In God..'. within folds of Liberty's gown.

There is no reaction to a rare earth magnet. I also tried to dislodge a piece on Reverse with the sharp edge of a micro-screwdriver, it scratches, but does not smear. The substance appears to be metallic in Nature. Has anyone had experience with identifying what this material is or how it comes to be on coin? Thank you much... Joseph

Try soaking it in pure Acetone for a couple of days and then see if any of that crud has loosened up.I am thinking it may be some kind of substance residue.Otherwise it could have been torched or buried in wet ground reverse side down for a prolonged period of time, who knows! the obvious answer is that it did not come out of mint looking that way. It is considered PSD (Post Strike Damage)

Don't recommend scratching at it with metal tools. Wish I had more time to elaborate, but will have to follow up more later. Thanks, Doug.

Giving this coin a bath in acetone would be my first action. Just soaking though--no scratching or rubbing as @halo1st mentioned.

Damage from an aerosol spray of caustic substance such as bug spray has caused a metallic reaction to the droplets. Noticeable spray pattern.

to CCF. Try soaking in 100% pure acetone and see what/if anything improves.

Thanks for great welcome!

I'll have to pick some up, but I am going to give that acetone bath a try. Will report back with results in several days.

I did check weight and dimensions... all correct.

Have good weekend everyone... Joseph

Common date, ruinous damage.
I'd unload it as junk silver asap. You can then pick up a lightly circulated, pleasing example for $10 or less.
