I really ought to remove this topic from public view. So painful, it is! At least this reply moved it to page two. No one post those photos again!

But once you get past the iconic and high-dollar coin destroyed and offered for a ridiculous price, it's interesting to ponder "how did that happen?". Sections of rim and a couple wheat leave ends left sticking out into empty space on the reverse to me is fascinating.

Am I missing something, or does anyone else think it's a little sneaky to use the description "AU Details Damaged #6366"? That creates the impression that it's a certified coin, but it obviously isn't. But yeah, weird coin. I guess if I were desperate to own that bit of numismatic magic, I might pay $40 for it. But you can get a half decent one for $500, as others have noted.

I have not done any business with this young man, however I do know him and he is very nice. $500 is not a ridiculous price, and I am surprised he doesn't have a lot of action on this buy it now. IMHO.

My concern is that it could be an excellent Chinese counterfeit hat has been damaged to throw potential buyers off the scent. I wouldn't buy an 09 S VDB uncertified in any condition or shape.

Quote: I am surprised he doesn't have a lot of action on this buy it now. How does one have a "lot of action" on a single coin buy it now?

@nss-52, by "action" I meant watchers. I would think there would be a bold red number of watchers on the listing, as I get when I get a lot of watchers on something.

Quote: The wheat stalk seems to be minted into the damage so I'm curious if this could have happened at the mint. Conversation piece but not $500 worth. So playing devils advocate with kbbpll statement. How would we feel seeing this coin posted here in a few months sitting in a mint error slab?....and how much would it be worth. I know, I was thinking the same thing.

Well, it does have the Blakesley effect. My daughter just said "Berty!". Took me a minute to get it.

It sold for $499.99, but I couldn't find any feedback from the buyer. Seller: dprc14 ps. I think it is a genuine 1909-S VDB. 162980734816

I saw this topic pop up and thought someone was going to say it sold. Wow. Genuine or not. Why? As a partial hole filler?
